NSF H1 and Food Grade Lubricants: What Castrol Optileb Is For

Castrol Optileb NSF H1 food grade lubricant

Food grade lubrication is one of the few areas of this trade where getting it wrong is a compliance problem rather than just a maintenance one. It is also one of the most widely misunderstood.

H1 is a registration, not a brand

NSF H1 is a registration granted to individual lubricant products approved for use where incidental contact with food is possible. It applies product by product. No manufacturer is food grade as a whole, and any supplier who tells you otherwise is either confused or careless.

That distinction matters when you are ordering. Asking for food grade hydraulic oil from a brand is not enough. You need the specific registered product.

Incidental contact is the key phrase

H1 covers lubricants used on equipment where contact with the product is possible but not intended. It does not license contact, and it does not mean the lubricant is an ingredient. Good practice is unchanged: minimise contact, maintain equipment properly, and keep the lubricant where it belongs.

Where Optileb fits

The Castrol Optileb range is the H1 registered family, covering gear oils, hydraulic fluids and chain lubricants for food and beverage production lines. Chain and conveyor lubrication is a common use, because those are the points where contact risk is highest and where a non registered oil would be a genuine problem.

Segregation matters more than the oil

Buying H1 lubricants and then storing them alongside general industrial oil in an unmarked drum defeats the purpose. Keep food grade stock physically separated, clearly marked, and use dedicated dispensing equipment. Most audit failures in this area are housekeeping failures rather than purchasing ones.

If you need the paperwork

If your plant runs mixed brands, the equivalent H1 registered ranges are Mobil SHC Cibus and Total Nevastane, both of which we stock.

We can confirm the NSF registration number for a specific Optileb product before you order, which is usually what an auditor will ask for. If your plant also runs equipment outside the food contact zone, standard Hyspin hydraulic oils remain appropriate there.

Contact us with your application and we will confirm the right product and the registration to go with it, alongside the rest of the Castrol range.
