Castrol Hyspin Hydraulic Oil Grades Explained

Hyspin is the range most people mean when they say Castrol hydraulic oil, and it is wider than it first appears. Picking correctly comes down to two questions: which ISO viscosity grade, and which type of oil.

Start with the ISO grade

Hydraulic oils are classified by ISO viscosity grade, which is the oil thickness at 40C. ISO 32, 46 and 68 cover most industrial and mobile equipment. The number is not a quality rating. A higher grade is not a better oil, it is a thicker one.

The equipment manual is the authority here. Where you have a choice, ambient temperature is the deciding factor: colder running environments generally favour a lighter grade, hotter ones a heavier grade. Getting it wrong causes real problems in both directions. Too thin and the pump loses film strength under load. Too thick and the system struggles on cold starts and wastes energy.

Then choose the oil type

Within the Hyspin range the letters after the name matter more than most buyers realise.

AWS is the standard anti-wear hydraulic oil and covers the majority of industrial systems. AWH-M is a high viscosity index oil, which means its viscosity changes less as temperature swings. That matters for mobile plant working outdoors across a wide temperature range. ZZ is a detergent type oil, used where the system benefits from keeping contaminants in suspension rather than letting them settle.

When to look outside Hyspin

If the machine sits near a watercourse, in forestry, or anywhere a leak becomes an environmental incident, a readily biodegradable fluid from the Performance Bio range is the right conversation instead.

If your application is a gearbox rather than a hydraulic system, you want Alphasyn or Optigear, not Hyspin. Hydraulic oil in an enclosed gear drive will not carry the load.
